Hidden Oahu

by Evan Morrison. 09 April 2018.

Oahu is the most (unfairly) cliched of the Hawaiian Islands, but outside the tourist crush of Waikīkī, is a place of delightful surprises and awesome nature, with enough remote beaches and vacant trails to keep a solitude-seeking adventurer occupied for years.

I spent a few days there recently, my first in 25 years. With a fellow open water swimmer as my life/travel partner, we communed with the ocean as much as possible, of course. And there is so much wonderful ocean here.

A few highlights (click to enlarge):

One day, driving along the west shore, we spotted some fins a couple hundred yards offshore. We pulled over to the side of the highway, grabbed some goggles, and swam out to this:

Magical, indeed.
